For those who don’t know Kevin Dyer, a terrible car accident in early December, 2010 left him paralyzed from the waist-down. The result of this accident would have left many hopeless. Not Kevin. For all those who are fortunate enough to know him, you know of his intense spirit and his dogged persistence. Kevin has always been the type of guy to be the first one there and the last one to leave, and this inner drive propels him to face enormous challenges and accomplish great feats through hard work and belief. He will walk again.
Throughout his recovery, Kevin has preached this perspective: “10% of life is what happens to you, 90% is how you respond.” His unrelenting spirit and courage in the face of adversity shines every day as he works on his road to recovery. Never for an instant has Kevin had a negative attitude, and he is truly a symbol for strength of character and the will to succeed. It is amazing to see his progress and to witness the strides he has taken. You can see it first hand in this training session 11 months after his accident:
It has also been amazing to watch our community come together the past two Decembers to help support Kevin’s recovery at the Shooting Hoops for Kevin Basketball Tournament. 100% of the money raised went to paying for his medical expenses. We thank everyone for all the love and support they have shown through their generous donations to help Kevin walk again. The money raised went to a bike, braces for walking, an elliptical machine, and some of the medical bills that insurance would not pay. We can’t thank you enough for that! The tournament has been a huge success, and we look forward to hosting it again. Please watch this next clip of progress and achievement, filmed at the site of our Basketball Tournament, 15 months after the accident:
This year, we have received an update from Kevin–it sounds like he is almost at the break-even point with all of his medical bills. We have created a great foundation, and we want to keep its mission going. He suggested we sit down together to find another cause in line with our overall mission that could really use our support.
We’ve decided to team up with The Washington Jesuit Academy. Much like Kevin, this place is extra-ordinary. The school enrolls boys from under-privileged homes in the DC area and provides them with arguably the best education available in town. In order to do this, it calls for long hours and hard work. A typical school day lasts from 7AM to 7PM, and they go 11 months out of the year. Not only does this get the kids off the streets, but it instills in them a work-ethic that is unrivaled. These children are driven to become positive members of our society, and they are willing to put in the time and effort to do so. Kevin wants to help support someone who, like him, came into a situation where most would write them off and not give them much of a chance. But one thing we have all learned through Kevin is that you should never write someone off, because with the right attitude and support, anything is possible.
